Zane: Age of Enlightenment
Hyloneme, one of the two remaining nation-states in the Realm of Zane is a scholarly oligarcy whose Council of the Learned consists of the twenty-four brightest minds in the nation. A Learned may retire at any time, but may serve as long as they live and are not removed by the rest of the Council. A new Learned is then invited to take his place. The Council is composed entirely of men and has been since its inceptions, though there is no law against a female member. Its capital – Cyllarus – teleports with each new moon so as to make capture by siege difficult. Hyloneme is focused primarily on technological/arcane progress, so art and culture are thin here. Each town is generally self-governing, though a representative of the Council comes in to settle difficult disputes and “suggest” certain laws about every 3 months. The overwhelmingly flat grassland is kept magically sustained with well-measured portions of rain. Storms and extreme temperatures are unheard of. Magical tools and furniture are commonplace, with each family having an arcane practitioner of some sort. Hyloneme is slowly moving toward an economy based on magical exports rather than agriculture and domestic goods, though this shift is reliant on other areas of Zane purchasing such goods.
The population of Hyloneme is predominantly fey – elves, gnomes and the uncommon but not rare eladrin or drow live here. Some humans are allowed but only if they have strong magical affinities. Elementals in Hyloneme are nearly unheard of.
Hyloneme is known for its many independent magical universities, particularly the Circle Tower.
